By Pilar PIO

Executive Order No. 12 Series of 2021 was issued by Pilar Mayor Carolyn C. Sy-Reyes on February 4, 2021 to extend the deadline for renewal of business permits due to pandemic effects in the economy of the municipality of Pilar, Sorsogon. (source; Executive Order No. 12 Series of 2021, “An Executive order Extending the Deadline for Renewal of Business Permit due to Pandemic  Effects in the Economy of the Municipality of Pilar, Sorsogon”).

Business Permits and Licensing Officer (BPLO) Adelfa B. Mallapre expressed her viewpoint on the significance of giving extension from the usual 30 day-transactions, she said that the initiative of the Mayor will give relief to the predicament of the businessmen at present situation. She added  that the two month-extension will ease the burden of many businessmen’s inability to bring enough revenue because of unexpected downturn. Adverse effects of pandemic crises to the lives of the people and to the business activity could not be underrated.

Out of the 525 business applications in 2020, the BPLO reported a deficit of more than a hundred business renewal applications unserved in the present year. It was learned that these businesses found it hard to save the money intended for the payment of business taxes and regulatory fees because of unstable business operation since March 2020. Few new business establishments who applied for business permits filled up the vacuum left by those who were not able to make it during the scheduled BOSS.

The extension of renewal will last until March 31, 2021, as stipulated in the Executive Order which is already in effect as of this writing.

The Business One Stop Shop (BOSS) offered to business sector every year for the whole month of January seeks to speed up the processing of business permits within the municipality. Five offices in the LGU were assigned at Negosyo Center, the venue for the BOSS, to accommodate clients, BFP Personnel and DTI staffs were also at the venue to make their services accessible and available.

Business is the engine of an economy, the role of business in social and economic development can not be overstated. Success in business translates to the economic well-being of the people through the jobs it generates thus improves the quality of life of the people. Failure in business calls for strong business contingency plan that would lead them to cope with right support system.

The local government explores all possibilities to help the business sectors suffering from the ripple effect of coronavirus pandemic and calamities to rise again and make business and trade alive. ( Ma. Annie L. Perete)
